Gasoline Prices Start To Head Back Down

Gasoline prices are starting to come back down after surging over the weekend and earlier this week in the wake of Hurricane Ike, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report Web site on Thursday.

The El Paso average declined a tenth of a cent overnight to $3.691, while the Las Cruces average dropped 4.2 cents to $3.675.

The Texas and New Mexico averages both fell seven-tenths of a cent to, respectively, $3.701 and $3.729.

The national average declined 2 cents to $3.835.

  • Risk of mortgage delinquencies low in EP: EL PASO — El Paso’s forecast risk of home mortgage loan delinquencies ranked 239th among 381 metro areas in the United States, according to the third quarter Core Mortgage Risk Index recently published by First American CoreLogic, a California company that tracks foreclosures and other home real estate data.The index forecasts mortgage delinquency risks for metro areas.El Paso’s mortgage delinquency risk ranked seventh among 24 Texas metro areas. Houston had the highest risk in Texas and ranked 119th in the nation. Lubbock had the lowest risk in Texas and ranked 372 nationally.

  • Become a little more secure: EL PASO — Consumers can destroy their sensitive financial documents and get information on how to avoid becoming a victim of identity theft during a free Secure Your ID Day event on Saturday.The event, organized by the local Better Business Bureau, will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the West Side Sam’s Club, 7970 N. Mesa.The event is free, but donations will be sought to support the Better Business Bureau Foundation and its ethics programs.

    Consumers can bring up to three boxes or bags of documents, CDs, computer discs and other items to be destroyed.

  • El Paso Average Gas Price Rises Overnight

    El Paso’s average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline jumped 1.9 cents overnight to $3.574 on Wednesday, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report Web site. The Las Cruces average rose 1.8 cents overnight to $3.565.

    The Texas statewide average increased 1.7 cents to $3.532, while the New Mexico average fell four-tenths of a cent to $3.687.

    The national average increased 1.6 cents to $3.668.

  • Amigo outreach: EL PASO — The Amigo Airsho, El Paso Electric and Price’s Creameries have sponsored an outreach program that will allow 600 El Paso Independent School District fifth-graders to learn about aviation. Students from Hart, Bliss, Clardy, Crockett and Park elementary schools will take part in the program, to begin Friday and end Oct. 3 at the War Eagles Museum.The Airsho will be Oct. 4-5.The War Eagles Museum at the Santa Teresa Airport displays dozens of aircraft including World War II fighters, Cold War era jets and other vintage planes.

  • Retail report: EL PASO — The nation’s retailers had a mediocre back-to-school season, a leading retail group reported Wednesday.ShopperTrak, which monitors consumer traffic at 50,000 U.S. locations, reported that U.S. sales were up 3.5 percent in August compared with last year, while traffic decreased 5.6 percent.”Consumers are starting to feel the pinch from all the economic pressures they’re facing right now,” spokesman Aaron Martin said. Despite a decrease in traffic, sales still increased, he said.

    Consumers may “not (be) making as many trips to the mall but they’re still spending when they get there,” he said.

  • Gas Prices Travel Down In El Paso, Las Cruces

    El Paso’s average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline declined seven-tenths of a cent overnight to $3.575 on Friday, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report Web site.

    The Las Cruces average dropped 6.2 cents overnight to $3.585.

    The Texas statewide average declined six-tenths of a cent to $3.535, while the New Mexico average decreased 1.6 cents to $3.724.

    The national average fell four-tenths of a cent to $3.674.

    # Dolphins like Dos Lunas: EL PASO — Dos Lunas Tequila was named the official tequila of Dolphin Stadium, home of the Miami Dolphins professional football team and the Florida Marlins baseball team, Dos Lunas Spirits owner and Chief Executive Officer Richard C. Poe II announced Friday.

    The El Paso tequila company said it has signed a multiyear marketing partnership with the stadium. “We are thrilled to be associated with such a reputable venue, and we look forward to a strong, long-term partnership,” Poe said.

    Two premium tequila bars will be built at the stadium and will offer Dos Lunas margaritas and other cocktails. The stadium will have two other Dos Lunas bars and a full-color mural.

    # New Batteries Plus store to open Monday: EL PASO — El Paso’s second Batteries Plus franchise will open at 8:30 a.m. Monday at 7104 N. Mesa at Resler in the Colony Cove II shopping center, co-owner and retired Army pilot Kenny Ley announced Friday.

    The 1,200-square-foot store will employ four. Ley and his wife, Maureen, opened their first Batteries Plus store in June 2006 at 1441 N. Zaragoza at Don Haskins Drive

    A grand opening will be scheduled for later this month, Ley said.

    West Side store hours: 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

    # Western Refining stock hits 2-month high: EL PASO — Western Refining’s stock closed Friday at its highest level in two months.

    The El Paso company’s stock closed at $11.26 a share. The stock gained $2.22 a share from a week ago, according to data from Financial Content Services Inc. It was the stock’s best closing since July 1 when it was at $11.75 a share.

    Western’s stock is a long way from its $66 per share peak in July 2007. It sold for $17 per share at its initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange in January 2006.

    Gas Prices Continue Their Downward Trip

    El Paso’s average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline fell four-tenths of a cent overnight to $3.612, according to AAA’s Fuel Gauge report Web site.

    The Las Cruces average fell 1.8 cents overnight to $3.603.

    The Texas average decreased seven-tenths of a cent to $3.48, while the New Mexico average dipped 1.1 cents to $3.73.

    The national average declined six-tenths of a cent to $3.667.

    # Downtown restaurant grand opening: EL PASO — New Downtown restaurant La Catrina Mexican Grill & Cantina, 317 E. Mills, will celebrate its grand opening starting at 6 p.m. Thursday, owner Blanca Sapien said.

    The restaurant, which occupies the space that once housed the Downtown Sports Bar, had a soft opening Friday. It employs 15 people.

    Food samples will be given out from 8 to 10 p.m. Thursday, and live music will be from 8 p.m. to midnight.

    Hours: 11 a.m. to midnight Monday through Wednesday and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

    # Southwest to cut 2 El Paso flights: EL PASO — Southwest Airlines will cut two flight connections between El Paso and Phoenix beginning Jan. 11 as part of its plan to cut 196 flights nationwide early next year during what is traditionally a slow travel period.

    One flight from Phoenix to El Paso and one flight from El Paso to Phoenix will be cut, said Olga Romero, a spokes woman at the airline’s Dallas headquarters.

    The flight could be reinstated when the airline makes a new flight schedule for March, she said.

    Southwest has 35 daily nonstop flights from El Paso to 10 cities, the most of any airline serving El Paso.

    # Tiguas plan Socorro housing project: EL PASO — The Ysleta Indian tribe plans to build a $16 million housing project in Socorro.

    The project will include 30 duplexes with 60 rental units and 33 single-family homes for low-income tribal families, reported Albert Joseph, the Tigua’s housing director.

    The project will be next to the tribe’s existing housing subdivision with 105 houses at Socorro and Vineyard roads.

    The new project cost comprises $6 million for infrastructure and $10 million for housing, Joseph said.

    # Chick-fil-A giveaway: EL PASO — Chick-fil-A restaurants will kick off the new football season with a food giveaway Monday.

    As part of a nationwide promotion, any customer wearing football-related clothing will get a free three-count serving of the chain’s new Chick-n-Strips from 10:30 a.m. to closing at any of company’s three El Paso restaurants.

    Qualifying attire includes any visible article of clothing that contains any football team logo — from peewee league to high school, college and the NFL.

    The three El Paso locations are at the Sunland Park and Cielo Vista malls and at 1840 N. Zaragoza.

    The chain, out of Atlanta, has 1,400 restaurants in 37 states and Washington, D.C.
